Our History

In 1964, a group of parents got together to set up Retamar College and the doors opened for the first time on October 10th, 1966. What motivated them was the idea of providing a school which would be open to everyone who wanted high-quality education in human values for their children, and also provide a Christian orientation and a profound respect for each individual’s personal freedom.

From the outset, Retamar was able to count on the encouragement of Saint Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer. He was the founder of Opus Dei. The proprietors of the school, Retamar S.A., since the very beginnings of the College, have maintained an agreement with the Prelature of Opus Dei, entrusting them the charge of the Christian orientation involved in all the activities at the College.

In 1978, Retamar was granted permission to teach the International Baccalaureate (IB) and since then several hundred pupils have successfully completed their studies at this level. In 1968, night classes began for people who were working during the day. A few years later, a nocturnal Pre-university course was introduced and so younger people began to attend. Later, the timetable was broadened to take in the whole evening and the Evening Studies Section (SET in Spanish) came to be, in which Secondary, Pre-university and Vocational studies were on offer.

At present, in the evening sessions, we offer Vocational Studies at Medium Grade (Administration and ICT Management) and Upper Grade (Administration and Finance, Computer System Management, Computer Applications Development and Web Applications Development).

Between October 2015 and October 2016, Retamar celebrated its 50th Anniversary. Every event that took place was considered a homage to those who have enabled the School to be what it is today and also as a way of looking to the future, to set new objectives and renew our desire to be of service to our families and society in general. All the events and happenings concerning the Anniversary can be found on our specially dedicated website.
