THE MENTOR (PERSONAL TUTOR)
The mentor or personal tutor is a fundamental figure in the Educational Project of the School. Just as the tutor carries out his work with the group of students in a class, each student at Retamar is assigned a mentor who follows their progress individually. The task is carried out in close conjunction with parents and is key to achieving the common family-school goal: to make the student a person who is free, responsible and autonomous.
The mentor is a teacher who is directly entrusted with the guidance of students. Through friendship and trust, their mission is to ensure the orientation and complete development that corresponds to each student according to their age and individual circumstances, with special emphasis on their personal formation and their academic performance.
Each mentor speaks periodically with his assigned pupils in accordance with the needs of each one and maintains logical discretion about what is discussed. He also attends to his Christian formation and spiritual life, as a continuation of that which he receives from his parents and is in frequent contact with them.
The mentor knows how the student is doing in his classes, how they relate to their peers in classes and breaks, with their friends, family life, etc. All these points of developmental interest are necessary for the effectiveness of the joint educational task carried out with the parents.
The habits that are acquired in school are consolidated when the family maintains the same educational will as the School. Character is educated through discipline and self-control. Thus, through the development of positive habits, the will is strengthened, and the student is trained to live in society, serving others and configuring valuable life projects to put into practice.
Usually, a family with several children will have a single mentor for all of them, since it is intended that the mentor is a personal family tutor. This dynamic also greatly facilitates family logistics in relation to the School.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Retamar understands as a presupposition of the educational task the transcendent vision of human existence, and seeks the cultivation of human and civic virtues, which are the foundation of personal maturity. Without imposing criteria in matters of opinion, the School teaches to act freely and responsibly in civil tasks, with a spirit of service to others, of cooperation for the common good, social progress and international understanding.
All teaching and educational activities conform to the fundamental principles of Catholic doctrine. Retamar, through the spirit that encourages it, within its strictly civil, non-denominational legal nature, with the greatest respect for the freedom of conscience, promotes among the parents of the students, the teachers, the non-teaching staff and the students, a faithful adherence to the doctrine of the Catholic faith and morals. This is done in accordance with the teachings of the Hierarchy of the Church, which it loyally respects and venerates.
The spiritual and doctrinal care of Retamar is entrusted to the Prelature of Opus Dei.
Retamar considers the coordinated action of parents and teachers essential for the education of students and offers them the necessary guidance to improve their own training.
Likewise, it establishes as a fundamental principle of its educational work, respect for human dignity and the personality of each student, essentially, through the following points:
—It considers that it is the student who should be the protagonist of his own education.
—It tries to help him develop his individual skills in a climate of freedom and responsibility.
—It extends the educational task to all dimensions of the personality.
—It encourages the cultivation of those human and civic virtues that are considered the foundation of personal maturity, such as: sincerity, loyalty, justice, industriousness, friendship, joy, etc.
—It also attends to the acquisition of habits of coexistence, the sense of citizenship and personal responsibility, to cooperate for the common good of society and social progress.
—A transcendent vision of human existence is understood as a presupposition of the educational task.
All the teaching and formation activities of the School adhere to the fundamental principles of Catholic doctrine, always with the utmost respect for the freedom of conscience.
As a logical consequence of the Christian formation that is imparted, customs and traditions have come about in a natural way that manifests the Christian spirit in which the students are formed, within the atmosphere of freedom that prevails in the School. Therefore, no one is obliged to comply with them.
CHARACTER GOALS
Character Goals are one of the instruments that contribute to seeking education in freedom, favoring the formation of character and making it possible to achieve an ideal, with initiative and strengthened by perseverance.
Each of the Character Goals is specified in a precise and positive way in an easily understandable way for students, and sets an objective to be achieved in a short and valuable space of time.
EDUCATION IN VALUES
The formation given in Retamar is aimed at making students people with the ability to use their freedom responsibly. To do this, among other things, everyone has a class assignment (chore) that helps to foster the desire for service and to improve the functioning of the group.
It is taught to value the dignity of the human person, without distinction of race, religion, sex, physical or intellectual abilities, etc. Respect for one another, one's own work and that of others, for nature, taking care of material things, etc. It is something typical of the environment of Retamar, the first step to discover the deep meaning of being children of God.
To achieve a true love of the truth, the spirit of companionship and sincerity in dealing with others are fostered. They also try to transmit the values that favour the maturity of the human person, such as loyalty, justice, industriousness, friendship, joy, solidarity, etc.
In the Assemblies periodically held by teachers and students of a course, these issues are insisted upon, with specific objectives through each of the evaluation periods.
In summary, the education that Retamar imparts to the students is aimed at forming men capable of collaborating through their example and their fully developed capacities, in the construction of a fairer and improved society.
SOCIAL EDUCATION
