Our History

In 1964, a group of mothers and fathers joined forces to promote Retamar School, which opened its doors on October 10, 1966. Their objective was to make a school that is open to all those who wanted a humane education for their children. A quality education, that is Christian orientated with a deep respect for the freedom of each person.

From the beginning, Retamar had the impulse of Saint Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer, Founder of Opus Dei. The titular entity of the School, Retamar S.A., from the beginning, had an agreement with the Prelature of Opus Dei to take charge of the Christian orientation of all its activities.

In 1978 Retamar obtained authorization to teach the International Baccalaureate and, since then, several hundred students have attended these studies. In 1968, evening classes were started for people who worked during the day. After a few years, the Night Baccalaureate began, and younger students began to attend. Later, the schedule was extended to all afternoon, and the Afternoon Studies Section (SET) was established, in which ESO, Baccalaureate and Professional Training Courses were taught.

Currently, in the afternoon, Middle Grade Professional Training courses (in Administrative Management and Computer Science) and Higher Grade Professional Training courses (Administration and Finance, Information Systems Administration, Development of Computer Applications and Development of Web Applications) are taught. .

Between October 2015 and October 2016, Retamar celebrated its 50th Anniversary. All the celebrations that year were a tribute to those who had made it possible for the School to be what it is today. But also a look at the coming years, an opportunity to set new goals and renew our enthusiasm whilst continuing to serve our current students & families and the community. All the memories of that Anniversary, the celebrations and many other images can be found on the special Fiftieth Anniversary website. The following video was released on the day that Retamar turned 50 years old.
